It was first formally described in 1828 by the English zoologist Edward Turner Bennett asAcanthurus strigosus, with the Sandwich Islands designated as its type locality. In 1884, Theodore Gill classifiedA. strigosusintothe newly established monotypic genusCtenochaetus; this means that, as the monotype, it serves as the type species of that genus. The generaCtenochaetusandAcanthurusconstitute the tribe Acanthurini, one of three tribes within the subfamily Acanthurinae—one of the two subfamilies of the family Acanthuridae.
